How It Works

Every apple you eat makes your snake longer, and every extra segment is another thing you have to navigate around. In the early game you have plenty of room to maneuver and the apples are easy pickings. As the snake grows the same screen starts to feel much smaller, and the routes you were taking confidently a minute ago suddenly require a lot more planning to survive. That slow escalation of pressure is the whole game, and it holds up just as well now as it did on a tiny monochrome screen in the early 2000s.

Speed and Control

You can boost your speed by holding Spacebar, Z, X, or C, which is useful when you need to cross the screen quickly or cut off a path before it closes. It is also one of the fastest ways to crash, so use it with some awareness of where your tail is. If things are getting too hectic and you want to slow down and think, pressing O reduces your speed by 25%, which gives you a bit more reaction time when the snake has grown long enough that every turn carries some risk.

Two Player Mode

The two player option is where the game gets genuinely competitive. One player takes WASD, the other takes the arrow keys, and from there it is a race to grow the longest snake while simultaneously trying to get your opponent to crash into you or into the walls. It turns a peaceful solo experience into something chaotic and fun, and it is the kind of game two people can play on a single keyboard without any setup or equipment beyond the laptop in front of you.

Controls: Arrow keys or WASD to move in solo, hold Spacebar, Z, X, or C to boost, O to slow down. Two player: Player 1 uses WASD, Player 2 uses arrow keys.
